Born July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut, and raised in Texas, he ran the Texas Rangers baseball team before becoming Governor of Texas. He won the presidency in 2000 in a famously contested election, and his two terms were defined by the 9/11 attacks, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the 2008 financial crisis.
