Biography

James Earl Carter Jr. was born October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. He served in the U.S. Navy, working under Admiral Hyman Rickover in the nuclear submarine program, before returning home to run his family's peanut farm business. He entered politics as a Georgia state senator and then served as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. He won the presidency in 1976, serving one term (1977–1981) marked by the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, but also challenges like the energy crisis, high inflation, and the Iran hostage crisis, which contributed to his loss to Reagan in 1980.

Fun Fact
After leaving office, Carter went on to live the longest post-presidency of any U.S. president and became deeply active in humanitarian work through The Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity β€” he was still swinging a hammer building homes well into his 90s. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, becoming one of the few presidents honored with the award after leaving office rather than during their presidency.
