Biography
Stephen Grover Cleveland was born March 18, 1837. He worked as a lawyer in Buffalo before entering politics, quickly rising from Sheriff of Erie County to Mayor of Buffalo to Governor of New York, building a reputation for fighting political corruption along the way. He won the presidency in 1884, becoming the first Democrat elected after the Civil War, but lost his re-election bid in 1888 to Benjamin Harrison despite winning the popular vote. He then made a political comeback, defeating Harrison in a rematch in 1892 — making him the only president in U.S. history to serve two non-consecutive terms (as the 22nd and 24th president). His second term was dominated by the Panic of 1893, a severe economic depression that damaged his popularity and his party's standing.

In 1893, Cleveland secretly underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his jaw aboard a private yacht, disguised as a leisurely fishing trip, in order to hide the severity of his illness from the public during a fragile economic crisis — the operation was so secretive it wasn't publicly confirmed until decades later.
