Biography
John Calvin Coolidge Jr. was born July 4, 1872. He built a legal and political career in Massachusetts, rising from city councilman to Governor of Massachusetts, where he gained national attention for his firm handling of the 1919 Boston Police Strike. He was elected Vice President under Warren G. Harding in 1920, then became President in August 1923 after Harding's sudden death. He won a full term in his own right in 1924, and his presidency (1923–1929) was marked by a strong economy, pro-business policies, and general peace and prosperity — often remembered as part of the "Roaring Twenties" — though it ended just before the Great Depression began.
