Biography
Herbert Clark Hoover was born August 10, 1874. He trained as a mining engineer at Stanford University (part of its first graduating class) and built a highly successful international engineering career before entering public service. He gained major recognition for leading Belgian relief efforts during WWI, then served as U.S. Secretary of Commerce under two presidents before winning the presidency himself in 1928. His single term (1929–1933) was consumed almost entirely by the Great Depression, which began just months after he took office, and his perceived inadequate response to the economic crisis crushed his popularity and cost him re-election to FDR in 1932.

Before politics, Hoover was one of the highest-paid mining engineers in the world and even co-translated a 16th-century Latin mining textbook, De Re Metallica, into English with his wife Lou Henry Hoover — a rare hobby project for a future U.S. president.
