Biography

Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He studied at Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he became the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review. After working as a community organizer and civil rights lawyer in Chicago, he served in the Illinois State Senate before winning a U.S. Senate seat in 2004. In 2008, he was elected the 44th President of the United States, becoming the first Black president in American history, and was re-elected in 2012, serving two terms until 2017. His presidency included the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the killing of Osama bin Laden, and the economic recovery following the 2008 financial crisis. Since leaving office, he has remained active through the Obama Foundation and various writing and media projects with his wife, Michelle Obama.

He's an Emmy-winning narrator/producer β€” through his and Michelle's production company, Higher Ground Productions, Obama won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Narrator for the Netflix docuseries Our Great National Parks (2022). He's also won two Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word Album, for narrating audiobook versions of his own memoirs Dreams from My Father and A Promised Land β€” meaning he's picked up major awards in both TV and music categories as a former president.
