Fred M. Vinson had served as Treasury Secretary before Truman named him Chief Justice, and led a Court often criticized as slow to resolve the school-segregation question — a task that fell to his successor after Vinson’s sudden death in 1953, shortly before Brown v. Board of Education was decided.
