Harlan F. Stone

Harlan F. Stone, a former dean of Columbia Law School and Coolidge’s Attorney General, was elevated to Chief Justice by Roosevelt in 1941 despite being a Republican — a rare bipartisan gesture. He is remembered for Footnote Four of his 1938 opinion in United States v. Carolene Products, which reshaped how the Court thinks about protecting minority rights.

Confirmed as Associate Justice in 1925; elevated to Chief Justice by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941.
