Howell E. Jackson, dying of tuberculosis, nonetheless left his sickbed to cast the deciding vote in Pollock v. Farmers’ Loan & Trust Co. (1895) striking down the federal income tax — only to find himself on the losing side of the final 5–4 ruling. He died a few months later.
