Hugo Black was FDR’s first Supreme Court appointment, confirmed despite a controversy over a past brief membership in the Ku Klux Klan that surfaced only after he joined the Court. He went on to become one of the most influential defenders of First Amendment free-speech protections in the Court’s history.
