Stanley Matthews was confirmed by the closest Senate vote of any justice to that point, a single vote, after his nomination stalled amid concerns over his ties to railroad interests. He went on to author the Court’s opinion in Yick Wo v. Hopkins (1886), a landmark equal-protection ruling.
