New Jersey sends 12 members to the U.S. House of Representatives and two Senators to the U.S. Senate, for a 14-member delegation in the 119th Congress — currently 11 Democrats and 3 Republicans. Because House seats are reapportioned only once a decade based on the U.S. Census, New Jersey's 12 House seats are fixed through the 2030 census — that same apportionment sets New Jersey's 14 electoral votes for president: one per House seat, plus one for each of its two Senators.
New Jersey became the 3rd state to join the Union, in 1787, and its capital is Trenton. State-level lawmaking happens in the New Jersey Legislature, made up of a 80-seat General Assembly (2-year terms) and a 40-seat Senate (2 or 4 (staggered)-year terms).
