Texas sends 37 members to the U.S. House of Representatives and two Senators to the U.S. Senate, for a 39-member delegation in the 119th Congress — currently 13 Democrats and 26 Republicans. Because House seats are reapportioned only once a decade based on the U.S. Census, Texas's 38 House seats are fixed through the 2030 census — that same apportionment sets Texas's 40 electoral votes for president: one per House seat, plus one for each of its two Senators.
Texas became the 28th state to join the Union, in 1845, and its capital is Austin. State-level lawmaking happens in the Texas Legislature, made up of a 150-seat House of Representatives (2-year terms) and a 31-seat Senate (4-year terms). Look up Texas's state senators and representatives →
