Washington sends 10 members to the U.S. House of Representatives and two Senators to the U.S. Senate, for a 12-member delegation in the 119th Congress — currently 10 Democrats and 2 Republicans. Because House seats are reapportioned only once a decade based on the U.S. Census, Washington's 10 House seats are fixed through the 2030 census — that same apportionment sets Washington's 12 electoral votes for president: one per House seat, plus one for each of its two Senators.
Washington became the 42nd state to join the Union, in 1889, and its capital is Olympia. State-level lawmaking happens in the Washington State Legislature, made up of a 98-seat House of Representatives (2-year terms) and a 49-seat State Senate (4-year terms).
