What is the Speaker of the House?

The Speaker of the House is the presiding officer of the U.S. House of Representatives and is elected by House members at the start of each new Congress. The Speaker is second in the presidential line of succession after the Vice President. The Speaker sets the House legislative agenda, recognizes members to speak on the floor, and is traditionally the leader of the majority party.
