Bushrod Washington, George Washington’s nephew, served more than 30 years on the Court and was a close ally of Chief Justice Marshall, rarely dissenting from his opinions. He also inherited Mount Vernon and, controversially, sold dozens of enslaved people from the estate during his tenure.
