Oliver Ellsworth

Oliver Ellsworth was a principal drafter of the Judiciary Act of 1789, which established the federal court system he would later lead as Chief Justice. He resigned in 1800 while on a diplomatic mission to France, his health broken, clearing the way for John Marshall.
