Charles Evans Hughes resigned as an Associate Justice in 1916 to run for president, narrowly losing to Woodrow Wilson, then returned to the Court fourteen years later as Chief Justice. In that second act he steered the Court through its bruising confrontation with FDR’s Court-packing plan and the New Deal.

Confirmed as Associate Justice in 1910, resigning in 1916 to run for president against Woodrow Wilson (narrowly losing). Herbert Hoover appointed him Chief Justice in 1930, 14 years after he left the bench.
