New York sends 26 members to the U.S. House of Representatives and two Senators to the U.S. Senate, for a 28-member delegation in the 119th Congress — currently 21 Democrats and 7 Republicans. Because House seats are reapportioned only once a decade based on the U.S. Census, New York's 26 House seats are fixed through the 2030 census — that same apportionment sets New York's 28 electoral votes for president: one per House seat, plus one for each of its two Senators.
New York became the 11th state to join the Union, in 1788, and its capital is Albany. State-level lawmaking happens in the New York State Legislature, made up of a 150-seat State Assembly (2-year terms) and a 63-seat State Senate (2-year terms).
