How do state and federal laws interact?

Under the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution, federal law is the "supreme law of the land" and takes precedence over conflicting state laws. However, states can pass laws on matters not covered by federal law, and in many areas both federal and state laws coexist. In areas where Congress has explicitly preempted state law, states may not regulate at all.
