What is a state legislature?

A state legislature is the lawmaking body of a state government. Most states have a bicameral (two-chamber) legislature similar to Congress — a state senate and a state house or assembly. Nebraska is the exception, with a unicameral (single-chamber) legislature. State legislatures pass state laws, set the state budget, and in most states control the congressional redistricting process.
