What does a state governor do?

A state governor is the chief executive of a state government, similar to the President at the federal level. Governors sign or veto state legislation, manage the state budget, appoint state officials and judges, command the state National Guard, and can issue executive orders. Governors also play a key role in filling vacancies in U.S. Senate seats.
