What is the difference between federal and state government?

The federal government handles national issues such as national defense, foreign policy, immigration, interstate commerce, and federal taxes. State governments handle most day-to-day governance: education, roads, law enforcement, healthcare regulations, and state taxes. Under the 10th Amendment, powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states or the people.
