What does it mean to sponsor a bill?

Sponsoring a bill means a member of Congress formally introduces it for consideration. Every bill has one primary sponsor and may have multiple co-sponsors (members who officially support it). Bills are named by their sponsor and assigned a number — H.R. for House bills, S. for Senate bills. You can see bills sponsored by any member on their SearchMyRep profile page.
