What is a Senate or House committee?

Congressional committees are smaller working groups of senators or representatives that specialize in specific policy areas — such as the Senate Finance Committee, House Armed Services Committee, or Senate Judiciary Committee. Most legislation is first reviewed in committee before reaching a full floor vote. Committee assignments determine which issues a member can influence most directly.
