What is a recall election?

A recall election allows voters to remove an elected official from office before their term ends. Not all states allow recall elections β€” those that do require petitioners to gather a set number of signatures within a time limit. If enough signatures are verified, a special election is held. There is no federal mechanism to recall a sitting U.S. senator or representative.
