What is the Electoral College?

The Electoral College is the system used to elect the President and Vice President. Each state receives electoral votes equal to its total Congressional representation (House seats + 2 senators). Most states award all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote in that state. A candidate needs 270 of 538 electoral votes to win the presidency.
